Dell touchpad left click not working

The only thing that does not still work is the touchpad!!!! I can't do a systerm restore because after a clean install the touchpad never worked. I'm able to fire up the 'ALPS Touchpad' application and play around with the controls and do stuff like switching left click to right click and all.

I've been using an external mouse and checked in the Device Manager and saw that the device status under 'Dell Touchpad' says - This device is working properly but the 'Device Usage' is greyed out. Is there a Fn+F7 key like function on the Dell Vostro 1014, like in earlier versions of Dell laptops where the keypad could be made dormant? I don't see it on the keyboard but just wondering.I'm so disappointed with Dell!! The last thing I want to try is to open up the laptop and check for the wire ribbon. How do you do a complete recovery of the operational system to factory setting? I doubt if this is a hardware problem but I could be wrong.
